The Future of Making Sustainable Automotive Content is Now.

Global
November 3, 2021

As Cop26 begins, we take a look at our sustainable production work for Jaguar Land Rover and Lexus.

Each year the global commercial production industry produces thousands of tons of carbon and waste – despite the fact that technology exists to make the majority of productions carbon neutral and zero-waste.

To support a greener, more sustainable way to produce content that is kinder to the planet, last year MPC and Travlrr joined forces to launch a Sustainable Automotive Production Solution. The partnership utilises Travlrr’s highly curated global network of over 100 remote production companies, along with MPC’s award-winning global network of VFX talent, to create lower emission productions – ones where all carbon emissions can be offset.

The MPC and Travlrr partnership allows organizations to significantly reduce their scope 3 emissions associated with producing content on location – and in doing so reduce greenhouse gas emissions by over eight times when compared with that of a traditional shoot.

Darren Khan, CEO and Founder of Travlrr says: “People, businesses and brands have become far more concerned about their local environment and the world we would like to live in. Sustainability is at the core to making those changes and we’re offering a ground-breaking production solution to the automotive industry that helps reduce marketing carbon footprints, saves time and money – while expanding creativity for content and ads.”

An automotive solution for the industry will save clients’ time and money built on the ideals of supporting a more sustainable and greener way to produce automotive content that is kinder to the planet.

JAGUAR LAND ROVER

The partnership seeks to reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with producing content on location by over eight times when compared with that of a traditional shoot and was inspired by our latest project with Jaguar Land Rover. Last year we helped the multinational car manufacturer, shoot plates in one of the most remote parts of Iceland. With no way of getting there in lockdown, a call to Darren asking whether he had, by any chance, crew in that location proved fortuitous. Dafydd Upsdell, Executive Producer at MPC recalls: “We ended up using Travlrr who are absolutely phenomenal, they provided everything we wanted in two days. No one had to fly over, no cars, no travel. We had all the elements in the place that we needed and a fantastic end result.”

For the ‘always on’ publishers with high content, and high quality requirements, remote production provides a sustainable answer in the face of uncertainty. Taking the guesswork out of sustainability efforts was important to Dafydd says: “You’re only as good as the data you harvest.” For many, data is the missing link when it comes to really changing minds and spearheading change. The data gathered by the collaborative shoot for Land Rover between MPC and Travlrr was impossible to ignore.”

Crunching the numbers on a remote versus an in-person shoot revealed a stark contrast in carbon emissions once all the elements were accounted for. Flights or “bums in seats” is only one part of the equation; there’s also food, accommodation, post-shoot waste – everything has a carbon footprint. The Land Rover shoot Dafydd mentioned, produced eight times less greenhouse emissions than a traditional shoot, with absolutely no compromise on the quality of the end product – numbers that are difficult to argue against.

LEXUS ELECTRIFIED

MPC’s CGI-heavy campaign for Lexus Electrified was created completely remotely through MPC’s Virtual Studio Production using industry-leading game engine technology. The process was rapid, smooth, and real-time – and the result is a captivating and future-facing campaign that demonstrates how any vision can be made an environmentally-friendly reality.
